An Introduction To Forging Process Of Steel

The importance of steel in our lives is undeniable. It is so essential that steel is everywhere. It is in our homes, workplaces, cars, parks and everywhere which you can think of. However, the steel that we see in our daily lives is not in its original form but in fact has undergone treatment process to improve its qualities.

Forging is among the first steel treatment methods discovered by the human race. The forging process would typically involve a blacksmith with a hammer and anvil. The blacksmith also makes use of water to cool down the heated work piece. Rolling mills is a metal forming procedure in which metal stock is passed through a pair of rolls. Rolling is classified according to the temperature of the metal rolled. If the temperature of the metal is above its recrystallization temperature, then the process is referred to as hot rolling.

However, the forging process nowadays has undergone modernization. It no longer involves a blacksmith manually laboring away with a sludge hammer and anvil to form the desired shape. This tiresome process is now replaced by either making use of presses or hydraulic or hammers powered by compressed air. Despite this, there are also hammers run by steam and electricity too. Despite the modernization of the forging basic principal of the forging process remains the same.

The forging process requires a compressive stress to be applied on the work piece. This would help to refine the grain structure of the work piece so that they are orientated to the direction of principle stresses which the work piece will encounter during actual use. As a result, the work piece will have improved strength, ductility and toughness.

The forging process begins with a standard billet to be reshaped. Previously, the forging process can only be performed for uncomplicated shapes such as swords and blades. The reason for this is that it was hard to produce complex shapes correctly. Nowadays, due to the improvements in modern forging techniques, the forging process is not just limited to simple shapes anymore. Complex shapes can now be forged precisely using modern presses.

There are two types of the forging process. This is the hot forging and cold forging. The grain structure of the forged part and also its properties is affected by the temperatures at which the forging process is carried out. Hot Forging is when the forging process is carried out at a temperature higher than its re-crystallization temperature. Alternatively, it is known as cold forging if it is performed under its re-crystallization temperature.

There are a few varieties of the forging processes. Impact forging and press forging are two of the most popular forging processes. The hammer or load is applied by impact in impact forging. This causes the deformation to take place in an exceedingly short time. Force or pressure is constantly applied to the work piece in press forging. It can be done either by hot or cold forging

Other forging process methods include roll forging, swaging, cogging, open-die forging, impression-die forging, press forging, automatic hot forging and upsetting.
